I got SCAMMED on eBay!

That's right. I did something dumb and got ripped off as a result. I did'nt know what to do so I did nothing at the time and that was a mistake.

If you have not been the victim of fraud on eBay or another auction site, or classified ad site, then you will be. It is just a matter of time. When you place a bid, do you wonder if you will actually receive what you paid for? Do you wonder if the person you are buying from is a real seller, a scammer, or if the account was hijacked by a crook? Will they drain your bank account if you write a check? Will they steal the money in your PayPal account or run up your credit card charges if you use a credit card?

These are all good questions and the answer can be a dangerous YES to all of them.

Unfortunately many of us, yes, myself included, make stupid mistakes that put us at risk. What makes eBay especially dangerous to the average user is the fact that most of the people on eBay are honest. You and I become comfortable and even trusting when dealing with sellers and we can let our guard down or we may not even think that anythnig is unusual when a seller or buyer wants to do something unusual. Strangely enough, good transactions actually make it easier for bad transactions to occur.

You may not know how to pay in a manner that gives you buyer protection. You may not know how to identify a hijacked account or a fraudulent account. The signs are always there but if you do not know what they are, then you are trading in the dark. You have no idea who you are really dealing with. You are just guessing.

Ok, I will come clean. This is my first bad eBay experience. Soon after I joined ebay in 1998 I bought a laser printer for $200. I sent payment by money order and never received anything. Now what? I did'nt know the answer then. I do now. I did have options to recover my money and more importantly I could have avoided the entire problem if I knew what to look for in the seller's history and if I had known how to maximize my buyer protection. I just did not know then and I got scammed as a result.

Since that time, I have had 10 years to gain experience as a full time buyer and seller on eBay and I now know how to trade safely. That was not my only bad experience but I learned from each one and I found out how to trade safely by avoiding scammers and problem sellers.

Today when I see something I want on eBay, I can buy with confidence. I am no longer guessing. I am no longer hoping everything will turn out OK. I am no longer pausing before I click that bid button to wonder if I am making a mistake.

I know how to pay safely. I know what to look for in a seller's profile. I know what to look for in an auction. I can identify scams almost 100% of the time. The warning signs are there if you know what to look for.

Ordinarily it is hard for the average person to learn the lessons I learned. It took me TEN YEARS. I want to help other members of eBay by sharing my experience and everything I have learned about scams.
